Ireland was once almost entirely covered with mixed forests, and now, with currently only 1% of the total land area covered with broadleaf trees, it has become the least wooded country within Europe. Over the years, Ireland has been continuously importing tropical hardwoods from third world countries contributing therefore to the causes of famine. In 1986 Crann was set up by Jan Alexander to reverse this trend and to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable home-grown hardwood forestry to meet Ireland’s timber needs. Crann's mission statement is to releaf Ireland with broadleaf trees. Crann is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation with branches nation wide.

Help Plant The Oak Glen Forest, Coolbawn, Co. Tipperary

Planting the forest of the future

The design concept of the Oak Glen II tree sponsorship project is to integrate establishment of commercial broadleaf woodlands incorporating ‘banker’ tree species (like ash, sycamore, norway maple), long term tree species (oak) and mid-term potentially valuable 'niche' market trees (such as walnut, spanish chestnut and cherry) with amenity, recreation and ecological site features. The site, on private land, is in a magnificent setting with views across Lough Derg to the shores of east Clare.
For your sponsorship you will receive a certificate in the name of yourself/a loved one with a tree number, which also acts as a grid co-ordinate number within the forest. On the first Saturday of every month, certificate holders are welcome to visit the site where a guide is available - between 10 am and 2 pm - to help them to locate their sponsored tree and inform them on any aspect of the project.

Sponsor a tree in the Oak Glen ll forest

You can sponsor a tree to celebrate a birthday or christening, to commemorate a loved one or to mark any special occasion. For your €32 donation, you will be sent a tastefully designed certificate which will bear your name or that of a relative or friend with its reference number on the Oak Glen grid. A register of tree sponsor names is being compiled and will be held for future generations to refer to.

The Hedgerow Project
In April 1997 the Crann Hedgerow project was initiated with the aim of raising awareness of the value of hedgerows to farmers, to the landscape, for nature conservation and as a repository for many of the country broadleaf trees.

The Heritage Council initially funded the project and it has received awards from Lakeland/O’Neill, Environmental Endeavour and from AIB-Nation-wide Better Ireland. Specific funding for demonstrations and training events has come from the County Leitrim Partnership Board, Rural Dublin Leader, Leader II-West Offaly, the Forest Service, West Limerick Resources and North Tipperary VEC

Some of the achievements to date have included:

  • Set up of the "Networks for Nature" Project in association with the Irish Wildlife Trust.
  • Running of an "Hedgerow Day" in Msaynooth, Co. Kildare
  • Enviromental Partnership Project with Leitrim County Council developing hedgerow conservation strategies
  • Involvement in the Golden Mile competition in Leitrim and Tipperary
  • An educational/training visit to the British National Hedge-Laying Championship in 2001
