Foróige
is a national voluntary youth organisation which was founded in 1952
and was originally calles Macra na Tuathie. It caters for boys and
girls between the ages of12 - 18.
The club
in Banagher was founded in 1992 and last year had 48 members. The
club meets every Thursday evening from 7 to 9pm in Quigleys hall.
Over the
past year the club took part in many activities. The club went on
a summer outing to Achill Island for 3 days in August and throughout
the year they also attended inter-club discos. The club did bag packing
in Tullamore during the year and raised £850 for the club and
collected coins for the Foróige coin challenge. This was a
national Foróige fundraising event for Alzheimer's Society,
ISPC, the Marie Keating Foundation, and the Bubble Gum Club
Foróige
collected more than a million coins and beat the world record and
was entered into the Guinness Book Of Records. On December 5th, the
international day of the volunteer, a mural was made with all the
coins collected around the country and this was on display for two
weeks in Collins Barracks, Dublin. The mural was then dismantled and
the money was given to the charities. The members and leaders of Banahger
Foróige Club would like to thank the people of Banagher for
thier kindness and genorosity to the club throughout the year.
We would
like to thank the 3 schools in the parish for helping us with our
coin collection, especially St. Rynagh's National School who colloected
over 11,000 coins for us. The total raised was £850.
