Just a
few miles below where the River Brosna and the Grand Canal meet
the River Shannon lies Banagher (Beannchar na Sionna), situated
in West Offaly & joined to Galway by a fine six arched limestone
bridge.

A haven for visiting
English fishermen since the 1950s Banagher became a major centre of
cruiser holidays with the building of marinas in the late 1960s.
The width and depth
of the Shannon at Banagher provides excellent and safe facilities for
cruisers. The surrounding callows (flood planes), Eskers, and cutaway
bogs afford an astonishing variety of bird and plant life. There is
a rich heritage within easy access of Banagher including Birr Castle,
gardens and telescope, Clonmacnoise and Clonfert.
